For the past six months, we’ve been working on a new web client alpha. Today, we’re excited to invite you to try it. Say hi to Surf. And start downloading content, directly from your browser.
BitTorrent Surf is an extension for Chrome that allows for in-browser discovery and downloading.
The Surf demo video. The soundtrack: Swing On Low, by Willis Earl Beal. With thanks to the artist, and our friends over at Hot Charity / XL Recordings.
Here’s how it works:
Surf’s powerful integrated search function allows for site auto-detection. Know what you like already? Awesome. Custom discovery’s built in. Save your favorite sites, and use them to create your own combined engine.
Once you find the content you want, Surf measures and displays the health of the torrent file; helping you to select the best quality media.
Then, keep it all in Chrome. Surf allows you to download and manage files from within your browser.
Surf’s still in its early stages. Your feedback and input will help us build something sick. So, get your feet wet. Try it out. Put it to work. And let us know what you think.
Surf’s up at the Chrome Web Store: http://bit.ly/TNyGmn
Happy downloading,
The Surf Team.

Hi,
Just checking this out at the moment. Can you give more information on Surf Mobile and what that will do when released? What platforms will it be compatible with etc.
Will BitTorrent Surf come to Mobile? Time will tell. We’re focused on this Alpha for the moment. But we’ll keep you updated.
It doesn’t allow me to install it on my “Chromium OS”. Why is that the case?
Is it really a chrome app or a native app with chrome app face?
Hey, BitTorrent Surf installs on the browser as an extension. It is not a native app.
Thanks for announcing something cool to add to chrome and then not let me install it… What is this about it not being supported on my computer? It’s a brand new Windows laptop running the newest Chrome. How can it not be supported?
Hey there, you can install Surf on Windows 8. We just did a write-up on how to do so, here: http://blog.bittorrent.com/2013/01/11/installing-bittorrent-surf-on-windows-8/
Thanks for the quick update! I will be testing it out. Hopefully you guys can get a permanent solution in place soon.

Can’t install in Chrome Version 24.0.1312.52 m on Windows 8 – when accessing the extension in the Chrome web-store, the error “This application is not supported on this computer. Installation has been disabled.” is displayed.
Hi David, please read through this new blog post on Installing Surf on Windows 8: http://blog.bittorrent.com/2013/01/11/installing-bittorrent-surf-on-windows-8/
Sadly I can’t install it on the latest gen Samsung Chromebook.
The Torque executable (as with your last Chrome extension) is required.
I appreciate that this is progress, but please make your next release BitTorrent Web, or something else I could use on a Chromebook.
Know what would be really cool? A Native Client-compatible BitTorrent client that saves directly to Google Drive. I’m not sure if Google’s terms of service or API terms would allow that, but it sure would be cool.
Thanks for the feedback. This product is still in Alpha and we appreciate the suggestions, will take them into consideration.
I agree with Khalid. The second I heard about this browser-based torrent client, I rushed over to install it on my S550 Chromebook (not supported). I would LOVE to use this product on my Chromebook.
How does the “Add site from URL” work? What sites/urls are supported?
Sites can be discovered organically just by visiting the site. Or, you can type in the domain in to the Add Site dialogue and Surf will notify you whether or not it’s a valid site.
I keep getting the error “An error has occurred: Download was not a CRX” when I try to add to Chrome (Win 7, Chrome Version 24.0.1312.52 m).
Have you seen this yet? I know it’s Windows 8-related but might help: http://blog.bittorrent.com/2013/01/11/installing-bittorrent-surf-on-windows-8/#more-2367
Hello,
Currently using Bit Torent surf, but I am not able to change the download location. I do not want Surf to automatically download on the drive where my OS is placed. How can I change that. I connot push the browse button in the pop up screen I get when using set down load options.
And the second question is. Can I remove the program Bit Torrent that I am normally using for downloading?
Thanks for any help.
The download location button triggers a dialog that may pop behind the browser window and in some instances on a Mac with multiple monitors configured… will pop behind windows on the second monitor. The behavior of the select folder dialog is different on Mac and PC as it is an OS dialog…
Can you provide any more info?
Thanks kara,
Thanks for you reply.
I did not think of the possibility that a pop up screen might appear behind my browser’s page. But it did and I could change my download location.
I am very pleased with this extension.
Regards,
Thecla
How to remove it cleanly? When I remove this extension on Chrome, a progress called “Torque” is still in my system, and Torque become my default BT program.
Please refer to this post in our Surf forum. It has all the info you need on this specific issue. Thanks! http://forum.bittorrent.com/topic/8430-bittorrent-surf-common-solutions-and-known-issues/
Hi Guyz!
Could you tell me if this app will be available for other Browsers?

Firefox is on the way really soon.
When I try to add the extension from the Chrome Web store, I get an error message that the download is not a CRX. I am running Windows Vista and the latest version of Chrome. Any help would be appreciated.
