JaGoFF Releases Free Music for Buy Nothing Day

In support of Buy Nothing Day and #Occupyxmas, Chicago media artist JaGoFF has released a massive compilation of 51 tracks free to the BitTorrent community, including a full album with the accompanying instrumentals and acapella mixes (for the BT community to remix) in addition to three album covers. Download it today here

Artists have long used music to raise awareness of and advocate social and political causes. BitTorrent’s technology and expansive community provide a new platform for artists looking to share their music with the world.

This is JaGoFF’s second release via BitTorrent. The first, “The Chicago Promoters’ Ordinance Kills Independent Music”, is a compelling and humorous documentary chronicling a grassroots campaign to preserve the rights for independent artists to promote live shows in Chicago. The documentary, available for download here, raises awareness around laws that effect local arts and music communities.

About Lance DeSardi

Not willing to claim any one dance genre as his ‘style’, Lance DeSardi’s musical output teeters somewhere between the deeper sides of house and techno. At 32 and currently living in San Francisco, his music embraces all of his influences from over the years to the fullest, creating a unique juxtaposition of styles that anyone with discerning taste can get behind.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Lance got into music at very early age. After finding an affinity for bands like Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, LFO, and 808 State, it was obvious that his calling was in music of the electronic persuasion. As he dug deeper, the raw energy of the sounds from Detroit and Chicago came calling, and djing and producing weren’t far behind…

Not long after getting his production and dj career under way, Lance uprooted and moved to California. There in the fog and lights, he found his element and quickly became a mainstay in the west-coast house music community, releasing records on labels like Classic, Naked Music, Coco Machete, Seasons, and PIAS, to name a few. With his 2003 underground hit “Tie Me Up”, under the moniker Land Shark, or his huge remix of Zap Mama’s “Rafiki”, he’s firmly solidified his place in dance music lore.

These days Lance has his a hand in many different aspects of music. He runs a label and coinciding club/underground night called Bang the Box, has a slew of new releases set to go, and even does mix-down and pre-mastering work out of his home base studio, Drums & Wires. With house music back in the dance world’s favor, 2012 is shaping up to be quite a year for one of SF’s finest.

About DJ Cheb I Sabbah:

The music of the world converges through the productions and remixes of Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah. The producer/promoter of a now defunct world music series, 1002 Nights, Sabbah presented a diverse range of musicians including Pakistani Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and London-based Bhangra group, Bally Sagoo. Since 1988, Sabbah has presented a similar series, Africa/India/Arabia, weekly at Nickie’s, a popular San Francisco nightclub. Sabbah began his professional career in the mid-’60s, when he DJed at a Parisian club where he played American soul records. In the late ’60s, he became involved with an experimental performance group, the Living Theater. After moving to San Francisco in 1986, he joined a similar group, the Tribal Warning Theater, building a solid reputation for his artistically spliced soundtracks for the group’s shows. Sabbah’s debut album, The Majoon Traveler, released in 1994, combined cut-up remixes of pieces by Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and Angus Maclise with the poetry of Ira Cohen.

VJ Biolumenence

VJ Biolumenence has been intriguing Bay Area crowds with his dynamic, crowd pleasing visuals for over five years. His flowing, flowering, fluctuating visuals are beamed from a beating, breathing, bawling silicon heart, filtered through the lithe liquid liturgy of the crowd’s energy and streamed steaming out high lumen projectors from SF venues (1015, Mighty, Concourse Center) to the biggest sound camps on the playa (Opulent Temple, Hookahdome, Fractal Nation). Biolumenence has thrilled audiences along side such musical luminaries as Opiou, Infected Mushroom, Christopher Lawrence, Sid Gris, Sex Pixels, Cheb i Sebbah, and David Starfire. Best known for his real-time “audio-reactive” visuals, Biolumenence’s shows are known for creating a flowing sense of synchronicity of the senses, and elevating the crowd’s energy into a frenetic, ecstatic, kinetic realm.

Bray in the Spotlight: Content Release and Live Show!

What do you get when you combine a new Spotlight Artist, the release of a new video for a hit single, and a live concert event in San Francisco, streamed by yours truly?

A cool, integrated experience, just for you. All brought to you in partnership with a fantastic rock performer, Bray.

Here’s the scoop:

Tomorrow morning at around 11:30 a.m., we’ll be releasing a new content bundle featuring the music video of Bray’s hit single “Clone Me,” the entire album “@mphibian,” and a collection of video episodes from “A Day in the Life of Bray.” You can download the torrent bundle here or visit Bray’s Featured Content page.

Then, on Saturday night, Bray will be performing live at the RockIt Room in San Francisco (on Clement between 5th and 6th) and celebrating the world premiere of his new video. BitTorrent will be on hand to stream it live! Tickets are $12 (available here). If you aren’t local or can’t make it to the show, check the BitTorrent Live website at 9:30 p.m. Pacific time.

Why is this a particularly interesting event for us? It is our first off-site test of BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen’s new live peer-to-peer streaming protocol. This new technology is designed to enable you to stream video over the Internet with very low latency and no expensive server infrastructure required (99% offload).

As you know, for the past few weeks we’ve been testing the protocol by live streaming some very cool DJs from our BitTorrent offices. These tests have been designed to test scalability of the technology. While we haven’t yet turned the technology into a product (expect to hear more from us on this early next year), the protocol tests have been pretty stable to date. So when our friend Bray mentioned he’d be playing locally this weekend, we jumped at the chance to have a little fun with our ongoing testing.

And we’re very happy to do this test with Bray.

“BitTorrent has been an amazing innovator for a quite some time. This new live streaming protocol could totally transform the Internet experience and we’re super excited to play a part in helping test it out,” said Bray.

He continued, “Plus, BitTorrent has been working hard to show their support for the independent music community by experimenting with new ways to help us reach their massive, global audience. I’m excited to see first hand how it works!”

Voted “Best Live Band” by the San Francisco Herald and called “An artist to watch out for” by the San Jose Mercury News, Bray features jagged riffs, throbbing bass lines, and silky hooks. Bray was also named “Best Live Band” by the San Francisco Herald, and voted in the Top 100 Unsigned Bands in the Nation by Music Connection Magazine. Bray performs regularly in San Francisco’s top venues and is releasing a new album on Valentines Day 2012.  The lead off single, “Little Black Heart,” will also be available tomorrow through the BitTorrent Featured Content Channel.
