µChat: We Just Need Each Other

By Patrick Williams – Developer at BitTorrent Inc./µTorrent

Live chat has been around since almost the dawn of the Internet. All you need is two people and a central server, and you’re connected. Until now.

You don’t need a server.

Last week, in tandem with the µTorrent 3.0 launch, we released my new app called µChat. It’s a simple idea, one that builds on the philosophy upon which BitTorrent was built. Distributed technologies are in our DNA.

For some time, our (always passionate) users have been asking for functionality in the µTorrent client to chat with people in a swarm. Some were looking for community-based tech support and product tips, others simply wanted to thank the seeders. It would’ve been easy for us to simply plug in a third-party chat app into the client and call it a day. But that isn’t in our DNA either.

There was one problem – chat functionality wasn’t on our immediate development roadmap. Luckily, BitTorrent encourages engineers to be independently creative and innovative. And so I decided to challenge myself with a side project: find a way to use P2P technologies to enable chat without the need for a server.

From the beginning, I knew our community already had awesome building blocks in the form of torrents and magnet links. Plus, our Apps platform would give me the ability to build an independent system that would install seamlessly with µTorrent without distracting from core functionality.

It was just a matter of architecting a system that would enable peers to chat in a group setting without servers. There were three main obstacles to tackle: connecting peers, a central place to find rooms, and buddy lists.

Magnet links are the biggest key to knocking down the first barrier. Virtually every piece of functionality in µChat uses magnet links in one way or another. For example, every room you join is a magnet link, and the peers you see in the rooms are fellow swarm peers. Except I pulled a fast one on µTorrent. You’re not actually downloading anything (and the peers don’t disconnect because we’ve coded them to be very optimistic about their future chances of getting the torrent file). That all worked well, except we still needed a way to find rooms, and we didn’t have a buddy list. Two obstacles left…

Next, I needed to find a central place for users to find chat rooms. Upon launch, µChat client joins a giant predetermined swarm. We’ve seen swarms in the wild that are absolutely massive, so it is a reliable way to get all the peers together to exchange information about available rooms. µChat clients actually inform each other about rooms.

Lastly, no chat function is complete without the ability to keep track and reconnect with your friends. So the buddy list is my favorite. In the real world no one knows all your friends. Just you. And when you introduce yourself, you can say whatever you want. I think that’s a pretty good setup, and so with µChat, your buddy list is known only to you, and you can call yourself whatever you’d like. When you become friends with someone else, you both add the same unique magnet link so that you can find each other later simply by joining that swarm. We also implemented a level of crypto to verify the friend. So instead of both your information persisting on a server, a friendship on µChat is simply a common swarm, your friend’s public key, and their original name (because sometimes a contact may have changed their chat name).

That’s µChat in a nutshell: simply a way to make and keep relationships with people around the world with no central server. And while another chat client is probably not going to rev the tech world’s engines, the possibilities created by the underlying technology are pretty exciting. And the underlying tech that makes this all work is already finding it’s way into my next side project…

µChat Beta App – Distributed Chat over BitTorrent

**UPDATE #2** The µChat beta app has been restored and may now be installed in your UT 3.0 “Find Content” panel. Give it a test run? Thanks again…

**UPDATE** We’ve temporarily removed the µChat beta app for a quick bug fix. We expect it to be re-posted in a few hours. Thank you very much for your patience.

Today we released an exciting new beta app for µTorrent and BitTorrent Chrysalis users called µChat. µChat enables real-time chat with other BitTorrent users around the world, directly within your software.

µChat is an optional app, available for installation at a user’s convenience in the App Studio or in the client under Find Content. It’s based on new patent-pending technology/methodology with a completely distributed architecture, meaning no servers are required. Both chat sessions and friend lists/connections are distributed, offering users a new way to communicate in a dedicated environment.

µChat leverages BitTorrent technology, which means user IP addresses will be visible to other chat participants. The feature is ideal for new users looking for tips on how to use the software, for enthusiasts to share advanced tips with one another, for community tech support, or for users to recommend/discuss independent artists featured in Find Content.

Also, µChat may pose an interesting marketing/social engagement opportunity for artists and creators to directly communicate with their fans. For example, the creators of the viral film The Tunnel, which released last month on BitTorrent, could set up a dedicated chat room to share new scenes, pictures, or join the conversations with fans who have seen the movie.

µChat offers:

-General chat rooms…users may create persistent or occasional rooms by broad topic with larger numbers of chat members.

-Private conversations…users may create a dedicated room with an invited friend or someone whom they met in a general room.

-Buddy list…no registration required.

-Quick Share…within µChat, you may select one of your torrents, generate a magnet link and send it to your chat friends.

For the beta, we will maintain an overload protection server here at BT HQ to prevent people from joining rooms with too many people. This will enable the company to test scalability in advance of the stable launch later this summer.

Thank you in advance for giving this a test run during the beta, and as always your feedback is welcome!

Patrick

µTorrent 3.0 Goes Stable – Streaming, Remote + More

µTorrent 3.0 is officially live! Here’s the press release.

First, many thanks to the 4+ million µTorrent users who pitched in and tested the beta. Your feedback was a significant contribution to the final product. We all really appreciate it.

Before we get to the good stuff (features list below), we also launched a new beta app today, called µChat. µChat enables real-time chat with other BitTorrent users around the world, directly within your software. Details here, or check it out in the App Studio.

What’s new in µTorrent 3.0?

Streaming

Watch videos within seconds with our progressive downloads – no need to wait for the entire file to download.  This feature is especially great for previewing a file before committing to the full download.

To use this feature, simply click the streaming button when it appears in the Playback column within the Torrents tab.

Requirements: Your video player must support streaming, and not all file types are stream-able by all players.

µTorrent Remote

Start, stop, and monitor torrent downloads on the go. Access your client from any Web browser (go to remote.utorrent.com or hit the remote icon in the µTorrent toolbar to sign up). Or, download the beta of our Android app.

Ratings and Comments

Ratings enables the collective wisdom of the community to ensure the quality and security of downloaded torrents. Join in and contribute by simply clicking on the ratings or comment buttons in your torrent manager.

Drag-and-Drop Sending

Easily send massive personal files – e.g. home movies, cell phone videos and hi-res photos –directly from µTorrent. Select a file on your computer, drag it into the µTorrent “Drop files to send” box and µTorrent will create a Web link. When you share this link with others through things like e-mail or social media post, you share your personal files.

Simplified UI

Keep your client simple by minimizing parts of the µT interface with a click. Perfect for anybody who wants a minimal interface, this feature cuts out distractions and lets you focus on the business of finding, getting and playing content.

Portable Mode

Load µTorrent on a USB stick and take it wherever you go, without leaving files behind!  Simply run the new µTorrent from a USB stick, choose portable mode during install, and µTorrent will automatically store your settings and content on the USB stick – even if the computer you’re using already has µTorrent installed.  No muss, no fuss.

Stability etc.

µTorrent 3.0 also offers under-the-hood improvements including a focus on stability as well as improved Web seeding to add speed and reliability to the process of finding the original source of a single-source file.
