Monday, Monday: Why Does Soymilk Curdle In Hot Coffee?

I’m sure you’ve found yourself in a similar situation… Into the office, arriving just a few minutes before the designated start time (although, if you showed up two hours later, maybe nobody would notice..? Perhaps it’s invisibility? Typical workplace? Or is it a function of left coast, forward-thinking, personal-freedom-equals-creativity-equals-possible-future-profits tech company, or could it be because the HR police just haven’t quite gotten a toehold yet..?). Into the kitchen and pump out a hot cup of Peet’s (that’s coffee for those of you not in NorCal… yes, I get a kickback for the mention). And has been my habit for the last week or so, I whiten it with soymilk (organic, mind you). And as I get back to my desk, it becomes apparent that I’ve made my first mistake of the day… Soymilk curdles in hot coffee. I’ve been trying to ignore this fact each morning, but reality can be denied no longer. Maybe soymilk works cold on your raisin bran or extra-crunchy granola, but it turns into little white turds of tofu in a hot cup o’ joe. Back to the cow.

Now, I know what you’re thinking… What does this have to do with movies, or even TV? We’re getting there, friend. It’s Monday morning. Takes a moment or two to get the wheels turning. Dunno if you’ve noticed this, but there is more and more entertainment at your fingertips and ever decreasing amounts of time to consume it. I find myself downloading movies (at BitTorrent.com, no less. Like the Hair Club for Men, not only do I “own” the joint — in a tiny way by virtue of stock options — I am a customer too) but don’t have time to watch said downloads. Believe me, I’m the first in line to take advantage of the Tuesday morning newsletter 99 Cent Specials. I’ve gotten a whack of good movies over the past few weeks (300, Black Snake Moan, Shooter, even Reno 911: Miami Unrated), but have I actually gotten a chance to watch them? (Can’t wait until we can download spare time! Somebody needs to get on that project right away…)

Let’s just say I’ve managed to enjoy the abridged, fast foward version or the in-the-background-volume-almost-off version of each of these films, and I promise myself that “someday” I am going to find time to sit down and enjoy each one of these from end-to-end with no distractions. Really. I mean it…

There is a certain satisfaction of knowing I’ve got a whole library of goodies on my hard drive, ready to go when that golden moment arrives… Someday.

Honest.
