SF Music Tech: Surf And Artist Tools Update

Catherine Meek, David Hilborn, Bram Cohen, and Matt Mason talk BitTorrent artist tools at SF MusicTech.

Catherine Meek, David Hilborn, Bram Cohen, and Matt Mason talk BitTorrent artist tools at SF MusicTech.

Over the course of the past year, we’ve partnered with musicians, filmmakers, and storytellers on a series of experiments. Our goal has been to create a more sustainable distribution model for the Internet’s creators and fans. Within 365 days, we’ve been able to create a legitimate content ecosystem 85-petabytes-big; connecting 16 innovative artists with 170 million activist listeners.

We’ve learned that BitTorrent users invest money and time to support artists. We’ve learned that they want to see better content in the BitTorrent ecosystem. We’ve learned that artists who distribute work via BitTorrent create stronger connections with fans.

And we’ve learned that our work is just beginning. Oh, man.

If you can’t make it, we’ll be reporting live from the event. Tune in on Twitter and Facebook.

SoShare Public Beta: Sending Unlimited

02142013-blog-post-580-337

We’d like to share something with you. We call it SoShare. It’s a simple, free file delivery service. And it’s a beautiful way to move big ideas and massive projects around the web, powered by BitTorrent.

SoShare’s a public beta that evolved out of a simple need. As coders, designers, and content creators, we have to deliver large files on a daily basis. We’re not alone, by the way. 3.34 million Americans work in creative industries. And still: there’s no media delivery service for people who work in media. You can’t fit everything into an attachment. Syncing services have caps. Delivery services have limits.

SoShare doesn’t.

Send up to a terabyte of data in one transfer. Yep, a terabyte. Move any file. Of any size. To any number of recipients. Collaborate on projects with friends and co-workers. Ideas are free. And so is SoShare.

Here’s how you get started.

BitTorrent Named One of Fast Company’s 50 Most Innovative

bittorent-optionsnotrules_0003_Layer-Comp-1

Each year, the good people at Fast Company review the year in innovation, identifying enterprises at the leading edge. The Fast Company “50 Most Innovative Companies” list profiles the thought leaders, problem solvers, and change agents who are redefining business as usual. This year’s honorees include established powerhouses like Nike and Amazon, creative upstarts like Fab and Uber, and social disruptors like Coursera, and D-Rev.

This year’s honorees also include BitTorrent, for using a 170-million-strong network to help artists who get it. We were just named one of tech’s most “terrifying/intriguing.” Consider us honored.

New Download From The Mickey Hart Band Supports Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

MHBjersey

Friends of BitTorrent and Archive.org, The Mickey Hart Band, are releasing new music to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

With the donation of your choice (even a tweet counts), you can download Jersey Shore: a new song, a live show recorded on the Jersey Shore last August, and tracks from Mysterium Tremendum.

Do some good, kids. 100% of the proceeds go to Clean Ocean Action, who’ve organized over 3,800 volunteers since November. Download Jersey Shore here.

Test BitTorrent Sync (Pre-Alpha)

Sync App

We like it when things work together. So we’ve been working on a new distributed syncing product to help manage personal files between multiple computers.

Today, BitTorrent Sync is in a pre-Alpha stage. And we’re hoping that users like you can help us build something sick. If you’re comfortable using early, incomplete software, and if you’re committed to helping us figure out a better way to sync, we want to hear from you.

We’re opening up enrollment in our pre-Alpha program to a limited number of testers. If you’re interested, check out the Labs page, fill out an application, and we’ll get you started.

Check out BitTorrent Sync.

Welcome To The Lab

BT_Labs_2

We believe in an open Internet. One where innovation belongs to all, and not some. One where creators and coders are given options. Not rules. Those are lofty statements and big ideals. But here’s a small step in that direction.

Today, we’re opening up BitTorrent Labs. It’s an Alpha site for our Alpha projects – all the stuff we’re working on that’s still in early concept phases. We’re inviting anyone (everyone) to experiment with these projects. And we’re inviting anyone (everyone) to build on them, and build their own. BitTorrent Labs is the new home for Torque, a JavaScript interface to torrent clients, designed for web developers.

So, come check out our Labs. We’ve got a few experiments up and running: from Surf, just released as an Alpha in the Chrome Store, to Sync, a brand-new file-syncing pre-Alpha. We’re looking for brave test users, for broadcasters, and builders. Come make stuff with us.

Experiment with BitTorrent Labs.
